Brexit. For British passport and other non EU passport holders, a stamp is now required in and out of the Schengen Zone. Until June 2022 it was not always the case that the passport was routinely stamped, by EU customs officials. Now things have begun to change. The burden of expectation falls on the commander of the aircraft to ensure that pilot and passengers have their passports stamped. If your passport is inspected and you do not have a logical stamp showing both entry and exit you will have some significant explaining to do and experience delay and or a significant fine. The law; in the event of non-compliance with the regulations in force, you expose yourself to a fine of between 300 and 3000 euros.
A legacy British Passport could still be one of the pre Brexit style, but the associated freedom of movement is annulled.
Give the EU Airport of entry and its associated Customs Officers the prior notification demanded. This is normally 2 hours, 24 hours or 48 hours depending on chosen airport.
Check your passport is stamped if you enter or exit the Britain / Schengen area through as a visitor . Border guards will use passport stamps to check you’re complying with the 90-day visa-free limit for short stays in the Britain / Schengen area. If relevant entry or exit stamps are not in your passport, border guards will presume that you have overstayed your visa-free limit.
You can show evidence of when and where you entered or exited the Britain / Schengen area, and ask the border guards to add this date and location in your passport. Examples of acceptable evidence include boarding passes and tickets. And recently pilot log books, but probably best to have a stamp to avoid delay. As at June 2022
At Britain / Schengen border control, you may need to show proof of where you intend to stay, for example, a booking confirmation or proof of address if visiting your own property (e.g. second home).
