DOTH
Europa Club – What’s a ‘DOTH’?
Don’t worry, no black makeup or dyed hair required – DOTH stands for ‘Drop of The Hat’ - and relates to a Club meet-up event at some airfield with a day or two’s notice, dependent on weather and your own judgement about safety considerations (of course). Some FAQ’s and more info below: - please consider coming along to one,- you will be made welcome!
Who can organise/call a DOTH?
Anyone in the Club. Just publicise the location (use WhatsApp group - which is perhaps best, along with date/time, and see what interest follows. Airfields with facilities like toilets, fuel and food are ideal/get the most interest. This is not just a UK thing either - Club Members and colleagues in Europa, the USA and New Zealand have been doing the same for a while. Be realistic – an attendance of more than 2 is a result, more than that is a party – and keep trying. People have multiple reasons why they can’t attend or have to change their plans – kindness rules.
Who can attend a DOTH, and how often are they held?
Anyone invited by Club Members can attend – which includes non-Europa Owners & aircraft types, btw. Bring your Partner/Wife along who will be made especially welcome. DOTH’s are held completely at random so there is no periodicity. There could be one every week - if there is the interest and the weather/aircraft serviceability co-operate . . .
What can I expect if I turn up at a DOTH?
A relaxed arrival (midday seems to work well – which also commonly co-incides with the best weather conditions in any one day), but you organise your own PPR and all other formal approvals/fuel requirements/permissions/payment of landing fees, etc. A 1-2hr meetup over some sort of meal or snack is commonplace. Depart when you need/want to. It’s a kind of ‘drop-in’ experience and a chance to visit somewhere you’ve never been to. No pressure to attend either – even if you have signalled you will be there. Aviation people cancel for all sorts of good reasons, no blame or disappointment . . .
Why attend a DOTH, exactly?
100’s of reasons, but expanding your experience/adventure/visiting somewhere new/swapping spares or stories, meeting new acquaintances face-to-face, or generally getting your aircraft used - are all reasons people have cited as a result of attending in the past.
