A unique Yorkshire fly-in to Newton-on-Rawcliffe private airstrip, Yorkshire, England: Took place Saturday 24th August by kind permission of Gordon Holmes.
(Note airfield not identified on aeronautical maps, Europa aircraft only, noise abatement etc.) By kind permission of the airfield operator. No fees. Note each invited pilot was required sign off on the conditions associated with the restricted airstrip.
Steam train Pickering Station. Then to Brompton to explore the heritage related to aviation pioneer Sir George Cayley. A one off opportunity to explore the actual original Cayley workshop and view Brompton Dale. The first time the workshop had been opened for five years. All the relics restored to the workshop just for the visit.. (The Europa Club is very grateful to Helen Scott, Louise Murphy, Dr Mary Jones and Rachel for their kindnesses facilitating access to the vista of privately owned Brompton Dale and Cayley’s actual workshop, now part of a private school). Wilbur Wright commented in 1909: “About 100 years ago, an Englishman, Sir George Cayley, carried the science of flight to a point which it had never reached before and which it scarcely reached again during the last century.”

So it was a new destination for many, a trip on a steam/diesel train to picturesque Pickering. An opportunity to pay homage to two famous Yorkshire aeronautical engineers: Sir George Cayley and Ivan Shaw.
A chance to visit the finest county in England and meet its folk.
