The History of LX-CWT:

This Europa XS Motorglider was built by Mr. Tom Welter, Aeronautical Engineer and composite specialist, who was during his career, engaged in the design and manufacture of composite parts for major aircraft companies. Tom sadly died of cancer, just after he had completed the build of LX-CWT. He managed, fortunately, to do a few flights before his passing away in 2007

LX-CWT was built as a Monowheel, because Tom wished to use it also for gliding. When I bought the plane in 2010 from Toms widow, I had to complete some Service Bulletins and I replaced the IVO propeller, which was deemed not suitable in combination with the Rotax 912ULS after an incident in Canada on a Eurofox float plane. (One blade departed in flight, and passed through one of the floats. Luckily no one injured). On advice from the LAA (UK), I installed an Airmaster AP322 fully feathering propeller. This I never regretted, and I consider this system better than hydraulic system I have flown on other types of aircraft.

In July 2010, on my second test flight, the monowheel landing gear collapsed. The airbrake extend locking device was not secure and came loose, resulting in a harder than normal landing, and the screws holding the landing leg pulled out of the aluminium frame. This was inspected and determined by the German Aero Clubs technical expert for Allianz insurance company. No damage otherwise to the aircraft, but the propeller had to be sent to New Zealend for repair.

This should not happen anymore. I decided to convert to Tri gear and redesigned the airbrake lock such that it cannot slip out of position. Europa Aircraft in Kirbymoorside was engaged to do the conversion. At the same time, they installed the new Bubble Doors, Cockpit Width Increase Mod., and leather seats, as well as the new strengthening of the Main Spar modification.

After Europa Aircraft were finished with the job, I made a number of flights from (ex. RAF) Wombleton together with the designer Ivan Shaw.  Ivan made thereafter some flights together with Nigel Charles for an article in the magazine FLYER. Ivan Shaw and Barry Barton kindly flew LX-CWT down to Luxembourg, once the weather was good. I had wasted three travels from Luxembourg to Kirbymoorside, just to find the weather had deteriorated by the time I arrived.

Finally, I have flown many nice flights with LX-CWT in Europe, from The Channel Islands, UK and many countries in Europe, including  Norway.

The performance of the Europa motorglider is impressive. Cruise is about 190-200 km/h with a fuel consumption of about 12 – 15  l/h. In calm weather a cruise of 215 km/h is no problem.
